Bethel Volunteer Ministry developed in response to meet the needs of fellow Coast residents. This ministry continues today as there are many needs in South Mississippi to recover from the most destructive hurricane in US history.
This is a ministry made up of volunteers from across our county who travel to Bethel Lutheran Church and assist in the many facets of the ministry with the goal of helping rebuild homes—lives—of Coast residents who have suffered the winds and surge of Katrina
The first few days post Hurricane Katrina, residents were in search of food and water, and together we provided. Next residents were seeking clothing, and we provided. Residents sought treatment for storm related injuries, then salvage related injuries, next illnesses related to the unhealthy living conditions, and finally a wide variety of medical treatment for which they could not pay without job or health insurance, or when family physicians were no longer practicing, and we provided.
Because of our fluid and active response to meet the needs which residents presented with, this ministry developed a holistic approach to helping Coast residents recover. |
